WHAT SITS BEHIND THE GLASS
📡

Authentic traffic

Position, speed and heading of every ship, received over AIS in real time through aisstream.io's shared network of receiving stations.

🛰️

No receiver, no antenna

Unlike an ADS-B radar, this needs no hardware of your own — just a free aisstream.io API key, no SDR, no marine antenna.

🖥️

Just one URL

It is a web page. Your screensaver simply shows it full screen — no proprietary apps, no accounts.

PICK YOUR SYSTEM — WE USE A FREE OPEN-SOURCE LOADER
1
Download WebViewScreenSaver

Free, open-source app. Grab it from its GitHub releases page (the latest .zip).

2
Install it

Unzip and double-click WebViewScreenSaver.saver. If macOS blocks the app, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway".

3
Set the URL

System Settings → Wallpaper → Screen Saver → select WebViewScreenSaverOptions → untick "Fetch URLs Remotely" → in the Addresses table, click Add URL and paste the URL below.

4
Multiple displays

If you have more than one monitor, enable "Show on all displays" next to the preview.

1
Install Lively Wallpaper

Free, open-source app. Download the "installer" version (not the Microsoft Store one) from rocksdanister.github.io/lively. That way the screensaver runs without keeping the app open.

2
Add the page as wallpaper

Open Lively → click +Webpage/URL tab → paste the URL below → add it.

3
Enable screensaver mode

Lively settings (gear icon) → Screensaver tab → enable "use current wallpaper as screensaver". To see it in the native Windows screensaver dialog, also install the .scr from that same tab.

This is the only URL you need to paste in the setup step

Want your own ship radar?
THE CODE IS FREE — NO HARDWARE, JUST A FREE API KEY

Build your own AIS screensaver

All the code is published on GitHub under the MIT license: the radar page (configurable coordinates, range, labels, locale…) and a Python server that connects to aisstream.io's free feed.

All you need is a free aisstream.io API key — no antenna, no SDR, no hardware of your own — and Python 3.

WHAT EVERYBODY ASKS
Do I need an internet connection?

Yes — the page loads from a server in Ibiza every time the screensaver kicks in, so the machine needs to be online at that moment.

Does it require an account, payment or subscription?

No. Neither the radar nor the recommended apps (WebViewScreenSaver, Lively Wallpaper) ask for registration or charge anything — the aisstream.io key is free too.

Do I need an AIS antenna?

No — it uses aisstream.io's free, crowdsourced feed. If you ever set up your own AIS receiver, this screensaver keeps working exactly the same, without needing it.

Can I watch it in a regular browser?

Yes — open radar-en.html and go full screen (F11 on Windows, ⌃⌘F on Mac), no install needed.

Is the data real?

Yes, without exception: every ship's position, speed and heading come from aisstream.io's real AIS feed, received by ground stations around the world.
